Waiting for Santa

12/17/24

Snuggled and tucked in bed, we weren’t even a little bit sleepy. Our house smelled like cookies that Momma made for Santa, and the twinkly lights made our living room so pretty. My brother, just a year older than me at five kept whispering to me about Santa. “He’s coming tonight,” he said, all serious. “But he won’t come if we’re awake.”

I tried to close my eyes, but it was too exciting. Every little sound made me sit up. “What if we don’t hear him?” I whispered.

“You’ll know,” my brother said. “Now go to sleep!”

Then I heard it. Jingle, jingle. My eyes shot open. I grabbed Brandt’s arm. “Did you hear that?” I whispered.

He sat up so fast the blanket fell off. “It’s Santa!” he whispered back, his eyes huge.

We scrambled out of bed and ran to the living room as fast as we could. We climbed up on the couch and leaned over to peek out the big window.

And there he was.

Santa’s sleigh was in our yard! It was red and shiny, and the reindeer were HUGE. Their noses puffed out little clouds into the cold air, and their bells jingled every time they moved.

Santa was sitting in the sleigh with a giant bag of presents in the back. His red coat was bright, and his beard looked so soft and fluffy. He did look jolly.

I clapped my hands and giggled, “It’s really him!” My brother grabbed my arm. “Shhh! Don’t let him see us!”

But Santa did see us. He turned and waved his big mitten hand right at the window. My brother froze for a second, then waved back. I waved, too. We looked at each other with the biggest, widest eyes. “Brandt, he ate the cookies!” I pointed. Then we looked under the tree. Presents!

We turned again to look at Santa. Quick as a wink, he was in the air and gone.

We jumped off the couch and ran back to bed, pulling the blankets up over our heads. We tried not to giggle, but it was hard.

We had seen Santa. The real Santa. And it was the best Christmas ever!

P.S.

This story really happened. Many years later, my brother and I talked about this event. We both held the same memory. Christmas has a magical feel, and children’s imaginations can be colorful. Did Santa really come to our house? I’ll leave that for you to decide.

I also want to note that not everyone feels all that magical during the holidays. Sometimes, life’s burdens are too heavy and hard to process. I pray if you have a heavy heart and are blue during this season, God will comfort you and give you peace.

Sending love and light,

Lestie

Updates:

I’m traveling with James for both work and holiday. Our car looks like Santa’s sleigh with presents to deliver along the way.

James and my 40th anniversary will be December 27th. We plan to see the play The Grinch That Stole Christmas. We’re looking forward to the play at St. Louis’s Fabulous Fox Theater.

When I can fit it in, I’m working on my Canva for Authors course. I’m hoping for a release in January. I will also start teaching the Canva for Authors class again on January 9th.

If you have any last-minute friends or family to buy for this Christmas, consider one or more of the books listed below. I’ve showcased a few of my author friends’ books along with mine.
